I have had an unusual career path. Although making art has always been very important to me I initially decided to train as a doctor rather than go to art school. After qualifying in Cardiff I worked in New Zealand for a time before settling back in Wales. Pursuing my love of skiing and mountaineering, I travelled extensively and my obsession with snow took me on expeditions to Alaska and unexplored ranges in Greenland.
Essentially self-taught, I continued to paint throughout this time and began to exhibit and sell my work. Feeling that some formal feedback was needed, I took up postgraduate studies in Fine Art at Chester College. It was at this time of research and experimentation that my work took on a more pared down quality, tending towards ambiguity and relative abstraction. Most of my work is landscape based, exploring the motifs, features and repetitive patterns that draw our attention. I paint in my studio overlooking the Clwydian hills and make prints at the regional print centre in Wrexham.
Ian has staged two successful solo exhibitions at manorhaus and has contributed works from both exhibitions to form the basis for the design of the junior suite - Oriel 5.
